Tyler is the county seat of Smith County, Texas and was named for President John Tyler. The 2000 census recorded population is 83,650, with an estimated 2007 population of 105,873. Tyler is the principal city of the Tyler Metropolitan Statistical Area, and part of the larger Tyler-Jacksonville combined statistical area. Tyler has been nicknamed the "Rose Capital of America" and its annual Texas Rose Festival draws thousands of tourists to Tyler. The festival, held every October, celebrates the rose-growing industry and its positive effect on the local economy. There is also a Rose Museum featuring the history of the Festival. Tyler is also home of the headquarters for Brookshire Grocery Company, which operates Brookshire's and Super 1 Foods, and Ole! supermarkets in four states. The company's main distribution center is located in south Tyler, while SouthWest Foods, a subsidiary that produces dairy products, is located just north-east of the city.

EDUCATION Residents of Tyler are mostly serviced by the Tyler Independent School District, with some of incorporated Tyler serviced by the Whitehouse Independent School District and the Chapel Hill Independent School District. The Tyler IDS includes two high school, John Tyler High School and the Robert E. Lee High School. Tyler schools are known for their high academics with several Tyler schools offering International Baccaluareate and Advance Placement programmes. Tyler also has the Tyler Catholic School System offering placement for students in its St. Gregory Elementary and Bishop Thomas K. Gorman Middle/High School. There are several other private schools, including Grace Community School, Christian Heritage School, East Texas Christian Academy, All Saints Episcopal School, Brook Hill School, and Good Shepherd Reformed Episcopal School.
Post-secondary education students living in Tyler have access to Tyler's own campuses, the University of Texas at Tyler and the University of Texas Health Center at Tyler, both part of the University of Texas System. As well, there is the Tyler Junior College, and Texas College. Other facilities close to Tyler include Stephen F. Austin State University, Texas A&M University, and Eastfield College.
RECREATION The area around Tyler is great for the outdoor enthusiasts. Tyler State Park is a 994-acre spring-fed lake located in the piney woods; eary year it is stocked with trout, making for excellent fall and winter fishing. Lake Tyler and Lake Tyler East municipal lakes cover about 4,800 acres and offer facilities for boating, fishing, swimming, and camping. Lake Palestine is a 25,500 acre lake with mostly commercial facilities for boating, fishing, and other water sports.
There is access to some of East Texas' best golfing in the Tyler Area, including the Hollytree Country Club, the Oak Hurst Golf Course, the Peach Tree Golf Course, the Arrowhead Golf Club and The Cascades. One of Tyler's best family gathering places is Green Acres Bowl. This 32-lane bowling center has something for everyone with a fully stocked pro shop and includes bumper bowling, league bowling, and pizza rent-a-lanes.
